emotional intensity that comes and goes, the bittersweet feeling it leaves behind

the first time i listened to wavestep was about 2019 in my first year of high school. i discovered the song by way of being recommended blank banshee by a stoner type, so i knew i was in for a real treat. as with many people, my introduction to bb was by way of listening to the hit teen pregnancy, and then being captivated by its crazy album cover that evoked some kind of nerd nostalgia. from there, listening to the album, and then tuning in to listen to the second song on the playlist.

i think there’s something to be said about how lonely of a time 2019-2020 was for me. i would get to school at about 6:30 am before the light was even up, and then i would just kind of sit next to a pole outside a cafeteria because i didn’t really have friends that got there that early, and i didn’t really want to be bothered by the insanely bright lights inside. the outside was dark as hell, so i kinda just wanted to relax and would always put this album on. the only way i would listen to it would be the full album from start to finish…by the time i was done with this 30 minute album, it was time for class, and i would see the sun rise by the time i reached the end. wavestep always came in when it was still dark out, and me being a lonely teenager with very low self-esteem caused by way of untreated anxiety and gender dysphoria, i would just be hit by such a wave of emotions that kind of helped me make sense of my thoughts.

it was like electroshock therapy for my ambivalent mind, and i have come to think that the sense of understanding i got from the song came by way of the glaring lyrical dissonance of the song. there’s layers to it, really. the song has these repetitive lyrics, stated in a tone that almost oscillates between dissociating from reality and wanting to actually cause self harm. the song’s sample is calming, peaceful, serene, but the synth is raspy to the brain, helping intensify the weight of the violence that the voice is calling onto itself. in the end, the last few cuts as the speaker turns on this bed of glass makes the song fade away. are they bleeding out? is this the oscillating thoughts crashing down? is it just the song’s audio file being hit with a fade out effect..? it feels so bittersweet, like coming down from shouting at someone and wanting to go away and cry to calm down and recollect your thoughts, thinking about how you’re gonna apologize or run away from the people that hurt you.

i’m not gonna lie, it reads really corny and almost edgy, especially seeing that i genuinely started this entry with absolutely no context, but the song never fails to make me really emotional. i’ve cried to this song, i’ve relaxed to this song, i’ve been angry to this song, i’ve really felt a lot.
